Anniversary Calculator

The anniversary calculator answers two questions at once: how long has it been since a meaningful date, and how long until it comes around again. Enter the date — a wedding, a first date, a work start date, or any milestone — and it returns the time elapsed in years, months, and days, along with a countdown to the next anniversary.

Anniversaries are worth marking precisely. A rough "about eleven years" is nice, but the exact figure — eleven years, one month, and eleven days — turns a vague sense of time into something concrete you can celebrate. The forward countdown is just as useful: knowing there are, say, ninety days until the next anniversary gives you time to plan, book, or simply look forward to it.

The calculation is done the careful way. Elapsed time is counted as complete years, then whole months, then the remaining days, using the real length of each month rather than a flat thirty. The next anniversary is found by rolling the date forward to its next yearly return after today, so the countdown always points at the upcoming occasion, not one that has already passed. Leap-day anniversaries are handled by falling back to 28 February in common years, the usual convention.

Elapsed time is the complete years, months, and days from the date to today, using real month lengths so month-end and leap-day milestones are exact. The next anniversary is the first yearly return of the date that falls after today; the countdown is the day count from today to that date.
