Subtract Days from Date

About This Calculator

The subtract days from date calculator moves a date backward by a chosen amount. Pick a date, enter a number, choose days, weeks, months, or years, and it returns the earlier date and the day of the week it falls on.

Working backwards is just as common as working forwards. To hit a deadline you often need to know when to start: a document that must be filed 21 days before a hearing, a payment due 30 days ahead of a renewal, or a booking that has to be made 60 days in advance. Subtracting from the target date gives you the exact "act by" date without any manual counting.

Each unit behaves predictably. Days and weeks step back by a fixed number of days. Months and years step back by calendar month and clamp at month ends, so subtracting one month from 31 March lands on the last day of February rather than an impossible date. Leap years are handled for you.

To use it, choose your date, type an amount, pick the unit, and press Calculate date. The earlier date and its weekday appear instantly, computed privately in your browser.

To move forward instead, use the add days to date calculator, which works the same way in the other direction. To count the gap between two known dates, the days between dates calculator does that directly.

How It Works

  1. Enter a start date.
  2. Enter an amount and choose a unit.
  3. Choose add or subtract, then click “Calculate date”.
  4. Read the resulting date and its weekday.

Formula & Methodology

The result is worked out as follows:

Result = Start Date ± amount (days / weeks / months / years)

The chosen amount is subtracted from the date. Days and weeks remove a fixed number of days; months and years step back by calendar month with end-of-month clamping, so 31 March minus one month is the last day of February. The weekday of the earlier date is read from the calendar.
