Age Calculator for School Admission

About This Calculator

Schools and education boards usually set a minimum age for admission to each class, measured as of a specific cut-off date. This calculator gives you a child's exact age in years, months, and days so you can check it against that requirement with confidence.

Admission rules are strict and often decided to the month. A child who is "nearly five" may still fall short of a five-years-as-of-31-March rule by a matter of weeks, and getting this wrong can mean a rejected application or an unexpected extra year. Seeing the precise age — not a rounded figure — lets you confirm eligibility before you apply, and plan ahead if a child will only just miss a cut-off.

Enter the child's date of birth and the calculator shows their complete age today: years, months, and days, plus the total days lived. Compare that against your school's stated cut-off. Many boards phrase the rule as "must have attained the age of X years on or before" a set date, so the years-and-months detail is exactly what you need.

The calculation handles leap years and month-end dates correctly, which matters because admission cut-offs frequently fall on dates like 31 March. Everything runs privately in your browser, so no personal details about the child are transmitted anywhere.

To use it, choose the child's date of birth and press Calculate age. If your school measures age as of a future cut-off date rather than today, note the exact age shown and add the months between now and the cut-off, or use the add days to date calculator to project forward. The standard age calculator and age-by-date-of-birth calculator work the same way for any age check.

How It Works

  1. Enter your date of birth.
  2. Click “Calculate age”.
  3. Read your exact age in years, months, and days.

Formula & Methodology

The result is worked out as follows:

Age = complete years, then months, then days (from DOB to today)

The child's age is the complete years, months, and days from their date of birth to the reference date. By default the reference date is today; compare the result against your school's cut-off date, which is often phrased as an age that must be reached on or before a fixed day such as 31 March.
